I absolutely LOVED this book!! It takes place over the span of 8 hours which makes it an intense, thrilling, emotional, amazing ride! The characters all have such unique personalities that this book is in no way boring, it keeps you guessing how the characters will handle each thing next。 This book was read in one sitting! This is a book to run and get as soon as it is out!!!Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Childrens for allowing me to read this。

So good! So, so good! I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this all played out! The pacing was perfect。 The dialogue top notch! The setting was out of my nightmares! I do not like the idea of being trapped! With each new secret revealed, I found myself more and more invested! I didn’t see the twists and turns coming! Go in blind, you’ll thank me later! One of my favorite books this year! Can’t wait to dive into Holly Jackson’s backlist!

4 starsYou can read all of my reviews at Nerd Girl Loves Books。This was an intense YA mystery/thriller about six friends headed to spring break that get trapped in an RV in the middle of nowhere by a sniper intent on learning one of their secrets。 The story is told from the perspective of Red。 Her mother, a police officer, was executed on the job 5 years ago and her father succumbed to alcoholism。 This, as well as having little to no money, set her apart from other teens。 Her best friend Maddie 4 starsYou can read all of my reviews at Nerd Girl Loves Books。This was an intense YA mystery/thriller about six friends headed to spring break that get trapped in an RV in the middle of nowhere by a sniper intent on learning one of their secrets。 The story is told from the perspective of Red。 Her mother, a police officer, was executed on the job 5 years ago and her father succumbed to alcoholism。 This, as well as having little to no money, set her apart from other teens。 Her best friend Maddie and a few others, however, have her back and make sure that she's not left out。 The story was well paced, although it did slow down a tiny bit in the middle。 As you would expect, as the teen's situation becomes more intense, some people's characters are challenged。 If you've always wondered what would happen if put in a life and death situation with a group of your best friends, reading this book should terrify you。 Some will give in to fear, others will problem solve, other will do what needs to be done, and others will be so desperate that self-preservation is their only driving force。 It was fascinating to see how the situation played out over the eight hour time period, and how many secrets the friends were keeping from each other。 There were definitely twists and turns I did not see coming, and every chapter I kept changing my mind as to who was going to die。 This was a fun, twisty, quick read that I recommend you check out。 I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Random House Children's, Delacorte Press。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

I was super stoked to see that Holly Jackson wrote a stand-alone YA crime thriller! I loved her Good GIrl's trilogy! 3。5 stars, rounded up because of how fast I devoured it。 Fun, fast-paced, requiring a similar amount of suspension of disbelief as her earlier books。 Not quite sure it stuck the landing but I enjoyed reading it regardless。

I'm not fond of books where the narrator is constantly "out of it" until a certain point。 I didn't think the characters in this book were distinct enough from each other。 Also why is Red's family so poor that they can't even afford cereal when her mom was a Philly police captain, a position that would have a very good wage (likely translating to good savings), not to mention an insurance payout when she died? This is a thriller for older teenagers and adults。 Teenager friends, whose secrets are more connected than they know, are trapped in an RV in isolated countryside by a gunman。 Twists, turns, tension and grief follow as they try to survive until the morning。 I listened to the audio version, but on this occasion I think I would have enjoyed the book more reading it for myself and expect it I would have given an extra star。 Thank you to Harper Collins UK Audio and NetGalley for the audio ARC。 The v This is a thriller for older teenagers and adults。 Teenager friends, whose secrets are more connected than they know, are trapped in an RV in isolated countryside by a gunman。 Twists, turns, tension and grief follow as they try to survive until the morning。 I listened to the audio version, but on this occasion I think I would have enjoyed the book more reading it for myself and expect it I would have given an extra star。 Thank you to Harper Collins UK Audio and NetGalley for the audio ARC。 The views expressed are all mine, freely given。 。。。more

So, Five Survive was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of the year。 I loved Holly Jackson’s series for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (except the last book… I despised it [see As Good As Dead])。 The writing was phenomenal for the whole series, which is why I knew I had to read Five Survive the moment it came out。 While I enjoyed the novel, though, it didn’t have the same flare as Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, but I can’t imagine that any novel will be that good ever aga So, Five Survive was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of the year。 I loved Holly Jackson’s series for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (except the last book… I despised it [see As Good As Dead])。 The writing was phenomenal for the whole series, which is why I knew I had to read Five Survive the moment it came out。 While I enjoyed the novel, though, it didn’t have the same flare as Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, but I can’t imagine that any novel will be that good ever again。 To preface this, I did like the novel。 Solid four stars for me。 I just didn’t like it as much as I was hoping I would。 Five Survive started out a little slow and could’ve been condensed much more than it actually was。 Once you got about halfway through, though, it was smooth sailing。 There were characters I absolutely despised。 Characters I rooted for。 Characters I just didn’t care about enough。 The writing, as Holly Jackson has already proven numerous times, was amazing in its style, the flow of the story, and the development of the characters。 I never thought this would be an issue。 My main issue with the book was what I mentioned above: it just started out way too slow and was dragged out for a hundred pages too long。 To get to the good stuff, though, I think Jackson did an amazing job at building tension between the characters。 Man were there times I just wanted to punch someone specific in the face over and over again (if you’ve read the book, you know exactly who I’m talking about)。 With the ending, too, there were some things that were predictable while others were not。 I still felt very thoroughly surprised with the resolution at the end, which was a welcomed surprise。Overall, while not as thrilling as A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Five Survive is still a solid thriller/mystery novel and will definitely satiate fans in that genre。 I finished it in about a day and a half and felt satisfied (at least for a little while) in the mystery department。 Holly Jackson definitely knows how to write a good thriller/mystery novel。 Favorite quote: “But I'll be there, I promise。 Will you?” 。。。more

4/4。5 stars。 let me preface this by saying Holly Jackson is a master thriller writer and an absolute genius。 but when i finished the book, looking back on it, i was a tiny bit underwhelmed。 it was still fantastic, but there were a couple things i didn’t love 100%。 first off, the writing itself was perfect。 being inside this main character’s head was so interesting and i think holly jackson did such a phenomenal job in developing Red’s character。 the other characters were developed super well too 4/4。5 stars。 let me preface this by saying Holly Jackson is a master thriller writer and an absolute genius。 but when i finished the book, looking back on it, i was a tiny bit underwhelmed。 it was still fantastic, but there were a couple things i didn’t love 100%。 first off, the writing itself was perfect。 being inside this main character’s head was so interesting and i think holly jackson did such a phenomenal job in developing Red’s character。 the other characters were developed super well too。 again, holly jackson’s books are a masterclass in mystery writing。 the things about this book that i didn’t love were all related to the plot。 first, the whole thing revolves around a certain type of crime and crime phenomenon that i just don’t really find that interesting (this is 100% a personal preference and in no way is an objective judgment of the book)。 then, I found most of the twists and reveals to be pretty underwhelming (minus one small one at the very end), which was really surprising to me because the AGGGTM series has some of the best twists in YA mysteries in my opinion (i also think they are the best YA mystery books on the market, as a whole)。 i predicted where the plot was going pretty early on and i was just waiting for a classic holly jackson twist to make me realize that i was wrong about everything the entire time, but that never really happened。 the AGGGTM series’s plot is so intricate and genius and expertly crafted, and this book’s mystery arc just didn’t quite live up to it。 regardless, i do still think this was a great book, but because i think the AGGGTM books are objectively PERFECT, i might have just let my expectations and excitement for a new holly jackson book get the best of me。 like i said though, the writing itself was flawless, truly amazing。 i just wish i had loved the plot/mystery arc a little more。 。。。more

When I say I wanted to love this book, I truly mean it。 I ADORED GGGTM and the entire series - including the much-contested third book。 But now that I’ve finished this book, I think I know why it sat so poorly with me。 First - it would be easy enough to forget that the author is not American, save for the very few times she says someone is “called” xyz name (instead of “named” xyz name)。 Why is this important? The plot of this story entirely centers around gun violence and gun trauma。 Is it rampant in America? YES。 Do we all have to live with that trauma and fear daily? YES。 As far as I know, Holly Jackson hasn’t recently moved to the US - and thus, it feels like someone outside of the states capitalizing on this - not exclusively/uniquely American, but certainly significantly American trauma, and to put it lightly, that does not sit well with me。 As an offshoot of the above, the rest of the book felt like trauma porn。 Gratuitous murder and rehashing of experienced trauma abounds。 Maybe I should’ve known better going into a book like this, but as I found Jackson’s previous books incredibly well done, I suppose I trusted the author more than the premise when I shouldn’t have。 On top of all of that, the characters are… incredibly one dimensional, and so much of the plot is just not fleshed out enough to justify some of the wild points she brings in。 Also that ending 🤮I finished it quickly - mostly just to get through it - but truly felt unsettled and kind of violated throughout the whole thing。 I know I’ll be the outlier and will certainly give this previously-beloved author another chance with whatever she releases next, but readers should know thyselves before getting into this one。 We have enough gun horror in America - I don’t need more of it in my YA fiction。 My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for a chance to read an early copy! 。。。more

I love thé little things too。 Like for example, at the beginning Red wonders why the RV is 31 feet, why not round down?? Then once they’re stuck, she is thankful for the extra foot and it’s just so immersive and i love the little details and just like AHHH wow I loved it so much。 Everything also felt so thought out and I loved where the novel was taken at the end。 The characters were also hands down spectacular!!! I love how Holly Jackson creates the characters and makes their backstories。 I also liked how I didn’t know reds secret until she revealed it。 I just like that even though she’s the main character there’s still mystery to her。 I also felt immense hatred for Oliver。 I FUCKING HATE HIM。 He’s just so dumb and I HATE people who are just crazy and dumb but that’s a good thing because I love to feel intense emotions when reading, glad he’s dead。 Like I almost cried when Red found out that Catherine Lavoy killed her mom, wow。 The plot twist was also so good!!! Catherine hired Red to be a witness against a crime boss who supposedly killed someone else that may become the mafia boss。 There was no evidence against this man and Catherine needed Red to be an eyewitness so that she could win the historic case (she’s a district attorney) and run for a big political spot whatever。 She also had been RELAYING INFORMATION TO THESE PEOPLE FOR 10 years and gave Red’s information to them under the name of her rival。 Win/win scenario。 Then these people sent ARTHUR (the guy who supposedly murdered the other guy’s son) to befriend red。 They all get in try RV while Arthur’s brother Mike shoots at them from a distance trying to get red to confess everything that she did and who made her。 Also Catherine killed Red’s mom because she was investigating the DA mole relaying info to the mafia (Catherine)! Wow, just fucking wow。 APPLAUSE FOR THIS BOOK PLEASE!!!Arthur and Red are also so cute, he even killed Catherine for her!! 🥰 ♥️ Holly Jackson literally has me in a chokehold。 Thanks for another spectacular book queen 👸! 🙏 😊 。。。more
